QVC Shows - March 29, 2000
Just when you think it's safe to watch a Boyds Bears and Friends Show on QVC, Gary Lowenthal shows up in bright red tights, boxer shorts and an egg costume complete with horns and a tail! Yes, it was an egg-straordinary day featuring one hour in the morning with show host Lynne Tucker and then two big hours of that dynamic duo, Gary and Mary Beth presenting Boyds plush and resins for spring.

Piper P. Plumbottom, a 14" white plush bear was my favorite from the first show. Her dusty pink, green and white plaid dress trimmed with a coordinating pink and white railroad ticking stripe is a wonderful example of the "new look" being designed by Liz Smith, VP of Stuff. The fabrics are made especially for Boyds, to replicate antique flour and feed sack materials. Piper's dress featured a button front, softly gathered yoke and striped collar and double piping bands, and her bloomers were also done in the ticking stripe. Silk flowers adorned the turned back brim of her matching plaid hat. She sold out completely during the second show.

Another wonderful, all-cotton "flour sack" fabric was featured in the blue plaid romper being worn by Leigh Ann Bearsford, a 10" cream colored plush bear. Tiny blue hearts and white stripes that looked like hand-quilting stitches were incorporated in the plaid, which was also used for her ear bow. Antique doll eyes with a black pupil and blue iris with fine lines have been used for this lovely bear. Lynne stated that she is only available on QVC.

Pastel colors and sheer voile bows made the bunny trio of Flopsie, Mopsie and Moxie Angelbuns, perfect little angel hares to welcome Spring. These 5 1/2" ornaments with wired wings featured a soft shorter plush and a silhouette only found on QVC. Flopsie was pale blue with a white voile bow, Mopsie pale yellow with a light green bow, and Moxie light pastel pink had a lilac bow.

Another trio was the set of 6" Mitten Kittens, Blake, Dickens and Ogden Wordsworth. Dickens, a light beige and white two-tone plush with a green neck ribbon is available in the regular retail line, but his two companions, Blake in black and white plush with a rust colored ribbon, and Ogden a rust and white plush combo with a green ribbon were QVC Exclusives. Gary said that Liz based their design on her own cat and they certainly had very cute faces and funny little wired tails.

Several resin items from the Spring 2000 line were presented during the shows, including "Honker T. Flatfoot...Send In The Clowns", "Maddie Purrkins With Puddytaat...Cat Nap", "Sudsie Faeriesock...Mischief Maker", the Wee Folkstone Fairy of Laundry, and "Momma and Poppa McNewbear with Baby Bundle...New Parents". Gary mentioned that Momma and Poppa are part of a Bearstone series that will later include Baby's First Steps and other important moments.

The 16" porcelain doll and 5" bear, "Taylor and Jumper...Play Time" is also available in the retail line, but I do want to mention that their jump ropes are designed with a wire inside so that they can be beautifully posed. Taylor is quite unique with one knee bent as if she is ready to skip rope. I expected her to begin singing "Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear, turn around, Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear, touch the ground"!

Also quite different were the set of two 6" mohair bears, Thomas and George Bearington, The Headbean's Pick of the Show. These little fellows were designed by Liz in a new "straight" mohair, Thomas in gold, and George a brown color. They feature jellybean shaped bodies and their necks are not jointed, so they are permanently looking upward with a bit of an attitude! Their arms are elongated and Gary demonstrated how adorable they were by posing them with their arms down and slightly toward their backs. They have small seed bead eyes, but very large ears. They got my vote too, for Pick of the Show.

Another cutie was Xin Fu Wongbruin, a panda made of black and white chenille in a new style with shorter legs, a little potbelly and a more natural looking shape around the soft brown eyes. Xin Fu was a very quick sell out.

A brand new item and a launch for QVC, Aunt Mattie MacDolittle was a lovely 16" variegated soft brown plush bear with brown eyes. Her face was an artist style with a hand embroidered square nose. She was wearing a beautiful burgundy velvet hat with silk flower trim and had a dyed to match burgundy voile big bow around her neck. Not surprisingly, the sold out sign came up quickly on this one.

Both shows included quite a few items returning for encore presentations, or available through our local Boyds dealers and I won't review all of those for you, but viewers were also treated to several new and exclusive items.

Lula B. Lightfoot, a cousin of the Whitbred family of white long chenille bears is the first of that clan to wear a dress and not a romper. It was done in a lovely soft light yellow velour-like fabric and trimmed with yellow satin rosettes. She had a matching ear bow with additional rosettes and measured 12".

Miss Abby and Miss Lexie Dowbunny in their spring hats made a lovely grouping with Lula. Miss Lexie's pale yellow hat with pastel silk flowers exactly matched Lula's dress and the pale yellow color was repeated in the fabric flowers trimming Miss Abby's light blue hat. I think these delightful 8" hares, (Lexie is white, and Abby is brown) would also nicely coordinate with Jenna D. LaPinne and Savannah Buttercup from the new spring retail line!

Lula and the set of two Dowbunnies totally sold out as did Tinger, Teedle and Tiffany Wuzzie Bear pins. Tinger, the bee with white wings and Teedle, the LadyBug were included in this set of three, along with a QVC exclusive Tiffany, a white butterfly with sheer mauve wings.

What could be more fun that a dancing cow? A dancing pig, of course, and the too, too delightful twosome of Twila T. Twinkletoes and Trufflelina Tripsalot wearing satin tutus were ready to take center stage. Twila, a black and white cow wearing a pink satin and tulle ballerina dress and Truffelina, a pink plush pig in a white satin and tulle dress each measured 6". Their dresses featured four layers of tulle for the skirt, satin bodices trimmed with rosettes, and puffed sleeves of tulle over satin. They had matching thin ribbon headbands with voile bows and tiny rosettes.

Mary Beth said we can look forward to a ballerina bear in June when Gary returns for the next Boyds Bears and Friends Show. Diane Combs will co-host a Boyds Doll Show on QVC Collector's Day in May.

Last but not least, a very quick sell-out and a QVC exclusive, Leonard S. Uproarius was a big soft 14" gold and white plush fully jointed lion with a full bushy mane and a bushy tip on his long tail. He had an adorable face with hand embroidered knots accenting his long whiskers and his arms were very unusual with slightly bent elbows and paws pointed downward. Boyds lions are always appealing, and from the rather brief glimpse we had, Leonard certainly lives up to that reputation and to his name.

Besides telling a few "yokes" during the shows, Gary announced that the Official Boyds website is now at: http://www.BoydsStuff.com    and there are plans to have pictures and names of Boyds items from QVC posted on the site in the near future. Viewers also got to meet Jean-Andre Rougeot, the new Chief Executive Officer of the Boyds Collection, Ltd.
