Why do I only get a gray box on my screen?
There are several things to check
The first thing to check is the settings on your browser. They CANNOT be set to "compress graphics". This is the default setting on the AOL browser, so if you have never changed it, be sure you do. It's very easy, I'll walk you through it. At the top of your window,
select "My AOL"
select "Preferences"
select "WWW"
select "Web Graphics"

then there is only once choice - UNCHECK the "compress graphics" button. Be sure to shut down and restart before trying to view the applet again.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Also be sure you are allowing enough time for the images to download. Depending on your modem and connection speed, it could take up to a minute. If you have ever gone to a page with lots of photos on them, you know how long that can take to download. It's the same thing with java effects that use several images. They still have to download to your computer before you can see them.   Java effects are awesome, but they are cumbersome in size.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If you still see a gray box, check the version of your browser. Your browser must be Internet Explorer V3 or higher, or Netscape Navigator V3 or higher.  Java applets will not run on WebTV  nor on certain versions of the America Online built-in browser.

How can I tell if my browser is old?
Go to the top of your browser window and click "Help". Then select "About". If it says your browser's version is lower than 4.0, you have an old browser. You can get an update at your browser's home page on the web. If your browser is old, you should consider updating it. You will get much more enjoyment from the web, and you will surf faster.

I have AOL, why can't I see the applets?
Make sure your graphics are not compressed (see the first question for instructions).
AOL's browser isn't great, but the good news is  you can use a newer browser with your AOL account. To learn how to use a new browser while keeping AOL, go to keyword: Browsers. You'll find complete and EASY instructions on how to use Netscape or Internet Explorer.

Do I need a "plug in" to view Java?
No, part of the beauty of java programs is that they run from the page server, not yours. The program (applet) does not download to your computer, just the images.

Why can't I see the applets on my computer at work?
This is a security issue with some firewalls and proxy servers. The next generation of Java is supposed to eliminate this problem.

I have Web TV, how can I see them?
Currently, Web TV does not support Java applets nor DHTML.(new, dynamic version of programming for web pages).
